Day 1 (March 12, 2016): And we're off!

Getting ready for our trip to Mauritius and Reunion was made a bit more complex than a normal vacation start, as I was in Ottawa with my work and didn't arrive home til late last night. Fortunately, I had  already packed (okay, well 50% packed!) before leaving for Ottawa, which helped a lot.

We were up at 7:30 AM doing that inevitable final list of to-dos. Our neighbours and friends, Jim and Lorna, arrived in the driveway at 10:15 to drive us to Halifax Airport.
The Bobbsey Twins?!  Close!  While completely unplanned, Pam and Lorna matched up well for the ride to Halifax Airport.
This is how fresh and bright we looked at Halifax Airport prior to the start of our 39-hour journey. Trust me: we shan't look as fresh when we arrive in Mauritius on Monday morning!

As March Break is just starting in Nova Scotia, all the flights out of Halifax were packed. It was a bit disconcerting when Air Canada could not assign seats to us because the flight to Montreal was oversold -- as were all later flights!  We are on a separate AirFrance connection ticket, so a missed connection in Montreal would have been disastrous. Hence our stress...  But everything works out in the end: we were given the last two seats in the last row of the plane a few minutes prior to the start of boarding.

We pushed back from the gate a few minutes before noon and arrived early in Montreal. Always a relief when things are on time when traveling in winter!  As our connecting flight to Paris departs 7:10 PM, it has meant a seven-hour connection time here in Montreal. We checked into the National Bank Lounge to wait things out and munched our way through the afternoon.
A great place to pass a seven hour connection time in Montreal

It is now 6:00 PM and boarding starts shortly. So I will post this first entry prior to leaving Canada.

We arrive in Paris 8:00 AM local time tomorrow and have eight hours to explore the City of Romance before carrying onwards to Mauritius late Sunday afternoon.

Feel free to join us on our Indian Ocean journey over the coming week. I promise great pictures of the Southern Hemisphere, with "un peu de Paris" thrown in for good measure.

Signing out until Paris!  Oh, and don't forget to "spring ahead" with your clocks tonight!

POST-LANDING ADDITION: Great flight across the Atlantic. Packed flight but wonderful service and meal. Unfortunately neither of us slept a wink.  But that's ok, as we are excited to be heading to the Eiffel Tower and other key attractions that will wake us up!
